The Qualifier...I Can's Say Anything More About The Ending
I dont know where to start and where to end but you would feel the same too if you had watched the action from the Start to the Finish of the first race qualifier in Sakhir,Bahrain where the first race for the 2006 season started.
New rules for Qualifying only means its gonna add more drama to a Saturday Afternoon and it did not let anyone down because it was a cracker of a qualifier and it left everyone breathless and gave everyone their money's worth.
22 Cars on the track equals a lot of traffic and with the conditions very tough with wind and dust on the tarmac meant it was gonna test the driver's skills in every tight corner.
But Ferrari rejuvenated after a poor 2005 and Schumi is on a war path and he would not let his team mate Fellipe Massa ahead of him in his debut and with less than 2 Minutes for the Chekered Flag Schumi did the unthinkable. He sped to glory to take a pole position and that is Daddy Cool for you but it left a few shredded nerves including mine.
Ferrari is racing Bridgestone Tyres and with softer tyres back in action there could be more pit stops and tyre changes but it is all for the better compared to the last season which saw drivers going round and round in their blistered hard tyres.
Schumi put in a lot of blood and sweat if not tears all through the winter when he actually drove in the Ferrari Test Track in Spain without letting any of the test drivers take the wheel. That is commitment and i am sure he would have stopped being an optimist if his efforts had not earned him dividends today.
In his own words..."From hero to zero wasn’t very much at that moment" yes of course Schumi you are right. And now taking the 65th Pole Position in his career he breaks the late Ayrton Senna's and hence the world record of maximum pole positions also ending a 11 year record that stood till the last 2 minutes of today's qualifier.
Kimi Raikonen spun out in the first round of qualifier when his car had a failed suspension which resulted in his Right rear tyre break loose but he still managed to crawl into the pit lane with 3 remaining tyres with the Fourth one still on tow. Team mate Juan Pablo Montoyo's car was quickly checked to see if it was the tyres...but then the team later confirmed it was a suspension failure. But it did not mean anything for Kimi as he has to start at the back of the grid tomorrow.
The Bahrain circuit is a difficult one and so is the Sepang Circuit which the drivers will have to cross on the 19th of March. And with no engine changes allowed the drivers have to be careful how they handle their cars tomorrow.
And with just V8 engines a lot also depends on the reliability. But...this is the big but that interests me. Low Budget teams like Red Bull Racing were permitted to race V10 engines as they could not afford high powered engines but with this comes the issue of reliability. V10s were more reliable than the V8s so i will not be surprised if this issue is raised in the later stages of the season.
It was interesting to see Rosberg's car spin out and hit the chicane which resulted in him taking the 12th position on the grid much to the disapppointment of Team Williams. But then team Ferrari will know that it can't afford to play poker with Renault as they are the bravest of the lot and with drivers Alonso and Fisichella things can change anytime.
What will be interesting to watch the performance of the teams like Midlands,Red Bull, Toro Rosso and Super Aguri which would have invested quite a fortune on the Race. But going by experience i would say i would never trust the underdogs. With J Villeneuve, Coulthard , Monteiro and Sato assisting the minnows the equations can change.
But with an All Ferrari front row in the first race of the 2006 season Ferrari is back in business and all that remains to be seen is the race tomorrow. Do not miss it for anything and do not adjust the TV sets for anything cos i will be watching you watching F1. So grab a pot full of fizz and get a ring side view of mankind's greatest entertainer... F1
